What is Assessment for learning?
“Assessment for learning is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there”.
Assessment Reform Group, 2002
As teachers Assessment For learning underpins everything we do in the classroom, it is the most effective way of raising pupils’ achievement. It is based on the theory that if a students will improve if they understand what they are learning and why. It takes into account everything from planning, learning objectives and outcomes to marking and giving feedback.
Why do we use AFL?
AFL is central to classroom practice, we use it to maximise the potential of every student that we teach. Using it helps learners know how to improve and develops their capacity for self and peer assessment. AFL motivates students and ensures that as teachers we know where every student is at and how they can improve.
